About the role

To manage a team ensuring maintenance of a quality racing surface all year round, managing maintenance of the outside areas to the highest possible standard of presentation and maintenance of buildings and equipment as well as assisting in the operational aspects of Racedays and Events.

This is a challenging yet rewarding role for a motivated individual. Although part of a team, working with one’s own initiative is vital in delivering the responsibilities within this role.

 

1. THE RACING SURFACE

 

Under the direction of the Executive Director / Clerk of the Course, carry out a maintenance programme for the course to include watering. This will involve record keeping and regular walking/inspection of the course and the adjoining areas

 

Responsible for preparing the course for racing – to include fence and hurdle preparation, rail movement, mowing, fertilizing, spraying, ‘treading in’, aeration, rolling and seeding as required

 

Ordering of necessary materials to achieve the above but in consultation with the Executive Director / Clerk of the Course for budgetary control

 

Responsible for repairing, setting out and realigning of the running rail as required by the Clerk of the Course

 

Control of groundstaff and casual staff on racedays

 

Monitor and record weather conditions plus attention to weather forecasts

 

In conjunction with the Executive Director / Clerk of the course, pre-racing Going reports

 

2. WATERING AND DRAINAGE

 

Maintenance of pumps and abstraction equipment

 

Maintenance of tow lines and sprinklers for course irrigation

 

Course watering, within the abstraction license, to achieve the desired Going

 

Record keeping for the above to satisfy the Environment Agency

 

Oversee any drainage works and monitor performance of such once installed

 

3. LAWNS AND GARDENS

 

Maintain all lawned areas and parade rings with particular attention to raceday presentation

 

Maintain flowerbeds and shrubberies

 

Ordering plants and shrubs – within budgetary constraints

 

Planting out flowerbeds through the growing season

 

Keep flowerbeds and shrubberies weed free

 

Hanging baskets – summer and spring/autumn

 

Maintenance of all hedges and trees

 

4. STABLES

 

In conjunction with the stables manager ensure the stables are prepared in line with BHAGI requirements for racedays and are cleaned afterwards in a timely fashion

 

Ensure that stables are disinfected in line with BHAGI requirements and records kept

 

Report any maintenance matters to the site team when necessary

 

Disposing of waste and manure

 

Ordering necessary equipment

 

 

 

5. OTHER RACECOURSE BUILDINGS

 

On occasion you may be required to assist with the maintenance of other buildings on site

 

6. SURFACES

 

Responsible for the general maintenance of outside areas including car parks, tracks, tarmac areas and horsebox park

 

7. EXTERNAL CLEANING

 

Ensuring all stands and enclosures are cleaned prior to racing and that all litter is removed after racing

 

Empty rubbish bins prior to and after each raceday or Events and Venue Hire activities

 

Monitor cleanliness of car parks, horsebox park, saddling boxes, equipment stores and all surrounding areas.

 

8. MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT

 

Ensure all course machinery and equipment is maintained in safe working order.

 

Organise repairs and replacements where and when necessary. Approval must be sought on such expenditure for budgetary control

 

Prepare an annual plan, in conjunction with the Clerk of the Course, for equipment purchasing and a servicing plan

 

9. STAFF

 

Instruct, supervise and assist staff in their duties

 

Recruit casual labour for racedays and otherwise as required

 

Ensure all staff comply with all statutory procedures and company rules

 

Supervise time keeping of all staff, plus collect, verify and return time sheets to the racecourse office. Report any sickness or absenteeism

 

Agree the annual leave/holiday for your staff and maintain records

 

Keep records of and report any injuries to staff whilst on duty

 

Supply staff with protective clothing when necessary

 

Regulations and safe working practices in accordance with current legislation and as detailed in the Company’s Health and Safety Policy and Procedures

 

11. EVENTS AND VENUE HIRE

 

Liaise with the Racecourse Office regarding Events and Venue Hire activities; arrange any input required by groundstaff
